Are you Self Aware?

At first glance, the term "Self Awareness" seems pretty straightforward. It means to be aware of self. But what does it truly mean?

“People need to know that they have all the tools within themselves. Self-awareness, which means awareness of their body, awareness of their mental space, awareness of their relationships – not only with each other, but with life and the ecosystem.” —Deepak Chopra

Self awareness is the conscious knowledge of your emotions, behaviors, beliefs, motivations, strengths and weaknesses. As easy as this sounds, many go through their lives (certain periods of it) not knowing what they're doing or why.

You can't be better or do better if you aren't self aware. Being more self-aware can help you to proactively manage your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, rather than allowing them to manage you.

According to research, when we are truly self aware, we are more confident and more creative. We make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively.

According to the HBR, there are two types of Self awareness. Internal self awareness (how well you know yourself) and external self awareness (how well you understand how other see you).

Not being self-aware involves not noticing how our behavior adversely effects those around us and how our unhelpful behavior sabotages the relationships we are trying to build. The benefits of self awareness cannot be overemphasized.

Which brings us to the question, " How do I become more self aware?" Here a a few things to do

  • Self care (spirit, soul and body)
  • Develop a high Emotional Intelligence
  • Ask for feedback
  • Write down your goals, plans, and priorities.
  • Do a frequent self-reflection

Self-Awareness is the first major step to changing your lifestyle, whether that change is personal or professional or spiritual.
